This project rethinks the role and use of plastics in architecture, introducing novel moldless, waste-free digital fabrication based on 3D printing. A digital process chain is developed, which allows to easily adapt the system through computational design to any given context. The system is demonstrated in an immersive installation of an ultra-lightweight, diaphane baldachin structure.
Plastics in architecture have unique properties in terms of weight-to-strength ratio, customizable material properties, low material costs, and potential recyclability.

Lecture: Tectonics of Concrete Printed Architecture
Monday, 24.01.2022, 14:00-15:00

The context of digital fabrication with concrete allows architects to reinvestigate material, process and design in order to explore novel expression in architecture. 3D Concrete Printing, or layered extrusion is an additive manufacturing method where fresh concrete is deposited in layers to fabricate a digitally generated 3D model. As a no-formwork construction approach with the advantage of precise, digitized shape customization, this process is ideal for the creation of freeform shapes that would be impossible to produce with any other technique available on the market.
Ana Anton is a Phd Researcher at the chair for Digital Building Technologies (dbt), Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at the Department of Architecture, ETH Zurich and associated to the National Centre for Competence in Research – Digital Fabrication, where she leads the research in concrete 3D printing.

MAS DFAB Trimester 2 Final Review - Beyond Transparency
Thursday 10.06.2021
Guests: Faidra Oikonomopoulou and Telesilla Bristogianni - TU Delft, Oliver Domeisen, Bartlett School of Architecture
In the 2nd Trimester of the MAS in Digital Fabrication, students continue to apply their knowledge of digital tools and additive manufacturing. The topic is based on an ongoing research project on robotic glass kilning. In 12 weeks, the students have tested how digital technologies and glass manufacturing can be used to create new architectural experiences, based on properties of form, color, light and process parameters. The creative potential and interconnection between fabrication processes, materiality, color and geometry will be presented in an outdoor pavilion located in the gardens of Swiss Re Center for Global Dialogue in Rüschlikon.

Lios, Michael Stern and Daniel Lizardo
Lecture: Lios Design Studio: Molten 3D Printing and Digital Glass
Tuesday, 18.05.2021, 15:00
ETH Zurich Hönggerberg, HIB, Zoom
Co-founders Michael Stern and Daniel Lizardo began their studio, Lios, as a vessel to realize projects in glass with unique form and behavior using the molten glass 3D printing process they helped to invent while students of MIT's engineering and architecture schools. Their work combines tools from digital fabrication, computational design and traditional glassblowing in order to connect glass's incredible materiality to advanced manufacturing processes as guided through a lens of design creativity. A humility to understanding material behavior is the core of the practice, and they assemble a concert of process, design, and product simultaneously to produce glass as truly unique forms, bespoke designs, and transformative spaces in the built environment.

Quayola | Lecture: Gazing Machines
Friday, 16.04.2021, 10:30-11:30
ETH Zurich Hönggerberg, HIB, Zoom *
Quayola employs technology as a lens to explore the tensions and equilibriums between seemingly opposing forces: the real and artificial, figurative and abstract, old and new. Constructing immersive installations, he engages with and re-imagines canonical imagery through contemporary technology. Landscape painting, classical sculpture and iconography are some of the historical aesthetics that serve as a point of departure for Quayola’s hybrid compositions. His varied practice, all deriving from custom computer software, also includes audiovisual performance, immersive video installations, sculpture, and works on paper.

Lecture: Glassworks
Friday, 16.04.2021, 16:30-17:00
ETH Zurich Hönggerberg, HIB, Zoom
Matteo Gonet GmbH. is a workshop where both experimentation and production are being explored and implemented. Founded in 2004, the workshop was established in a former aluminium factory, on the southern outskirts of basel. Specialized in « bespoke » work and ceaselessly aiming to improve new production techniques, glassworks masters a great number of skills : blown glass, poured glass, thermoforming, cutting, sanding, silvering… all this thanks to our craftsmen’s multiple and complementary skills, a source of wealth for our workshop. By exploring beyond our mere skills, we are willing to expose our know-how to all volume types and sizes with great coordination and to open our doors to various productions : project development, prototyping, limited or medium-sized editions.
Matteo recently hosted last October a Seminar Woche for Prof. Theriot.

Simon Mazoyer, Romain Hivet | Saint Gobain R & D
Lecture: Virtual glazing at Saint-Gobain
Friday, 26.03.2021, 16:30-17:00
ETH Zurich Hönggerberg, HIB, Zoom
Saint-Gobain is a building material company. During the last 10 years we used computed generated imagery (CGI) to conceive and promote our materials. Our specificity in the CGI world is that we focus our efforts on rendering the materials, our products, with the highest level of fidelity. We use slower and niche rendering technics to try to minimize the approximations made during the rendering process. We will focus our presentation of the tools and methods we develop to render our glazing products.
Romain Hivet and Simon Mazoyer are R&D project leaders at Saint-Gobain Research Paris, one of the corporate research center of the Saint-Gobain group. We are both physicist by training: Simon was awarded a PhD in Physics from Université Paris-Saclay in 2011 and Romain from Université Pierre et Marie Curie Paris-VI in 2013. We have been working the last years on modelling and rendering of Saint-Gobain glazing materials.

Up Sticks
MAS Trimester 2 Project Exhibition Opening
2 November until 9 February 2020
V&A Dundee, Scotland
Up Sticks project unveiled at the V&A Dundee in Scotland. Up Sticks is an expressive timber structure that twists and curves using only spruce wood planks and beech wood dowels. No glue or nails were used to hold the planks in space. With limited resources of our planet, Up Sticks presents a strategy of how contemporary knowledge in computation and digital fabrication technology can be combined with traditional knowledge about construction methods.
We would like to thank V&A Dundee for their support throughout the whole project. Up Sticks was commissioned by the V&A Dundee and realised by the students of the MAS ETH DFAB together with Gramazio Kohler Research.

MAS Trimester 1 Project Final Presentation
Thursday, 21.11.2019, 18:30
ETH Zurich Hönggerberg, HIB Open Space 2
Guests:
Gilles Retsin, Jelle Feringa
mini eggshell is a four-week design and fabrication assignment in which the MAS students developed their own take on the ‘Eggshell’ fabrication concept. Through an iterative process of designing, printing and casting the aim was to develop smart, efficient and integrated building components. Various building typologies such as columns, walls, hybrid and connection elements were explored using either clay or
thermoplastic formwork, showcasing some of the possibilitiesfor future concrete construction.
